We Will Create Our Own God
We are a generation that desires instant gratification. However, this is not new. Humankind has always been impatient, as is clearly seen in Exodus 32. In the account that is reported here, we see that Moses had gone up on Mount Sinai to receive the Law from God. He was there for forty days, which stretched the waiting ability of the Hebrew people. When they had concluded that they just couldnât wait on him any longer, they demanded of Aaron, Mosesâs brother, that he make an idol for them that would be their god. Caving in to their demands, Aaron collected gold earrings that the people were wearing and melted and fashioned them into a golden calf. These people had been rescued from Egypt by God and miraculously led through the Red Sea to their destination. They had seen the awesome power of God Almighty. Yet, as unbelievable as it seems after all that they had witnessed, here they were, in their impatience, willing to create their own god and bow down to a metal idol.
The short version of the story is that when Moses returned, there was utter chaos in the camp. Moses drew a clear line in the sand for people to choose between God and their own creation. As a result, approximately 3,000 people who were determined to worship a god of their own making lost their lives that day (see Exod. 32:1-35).
I wonder how many of us have created our own version of a golden calf, someone or something that rules our life? It doesnât matter how much notoriety we receive or what we accomplish in the eyes of the world. If we choose the wrong idol, it can be deadly.
I recall reading in early 2014 about the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. He was an acclaimed actor and talented director who seemingly had the world at his fingertips. Yet his drug and alcohol addiction could not fill the void. He was found on February 2, 2014, with a needle in his arm, dead from âacute mixed drug intoxication, including heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines and amphetamine.3 What a sad and unnecessary loss.
